Kilchoman Distillery
The Kilchoman distillery is located in the northwest of the Islay region close to Machir Bay producing single malt Scotch whisky.
Kilchoman was founded by Anthony Wills in 2005 and till today it remains as an independent, family run distillery.
The distillery has released several bottlings: 3, 5, 8, 10, 11 years with several special releases along the years.
History
Kilchoman is a relatively young distillery compared to the others is Islay, however it is rapidly gaining popularity amongst whisky lovers as an excellently produced Islay single malt.
The distillery uses both barley grown on site at the Rockside Farm as well as malt from the Port Ellen maltings.
Kilchoman releases separate bottlings depending on the source of the grain— one of the unique aspects of their releases.
100% Islay Edition
The 100% Islay series is representative of the revival of traditional farm distilling by growing their own barley before malting, distilling, maturing and bottling.
Here's what Kilchoman's Founder Anthony Wills has to say about the series: "It's a lovely 100% rich and fruity on the nose then lots of citrus sweetness and tropical fruit on the palate with waves of peat smoke coming through on the finish"
Tasting Notes
Tasting notes by Master of Malt.
The spirit was matured in 19 bourbon barrels and six oloroso sherry butts for at least eight years. It's a smoky, fruity, floral delight, and superbly well-balanced.
Nose: Sweet peat smoke leads, followed by homemade jam, lemon blossom, fudge, and kitchen spices.
Palate: Orange chocolate, toasted nuts, and burnt banana bread, alongside aromatic smoke and sweet figs.
Finish: Bittersweet cocoa, woody smoke, and cinnamon sticks.
